This is Lynn :) live in Australia and China, occasionally throw some of my fanart here, mostly supernatural. ASK:http://ask.fm/Catsiel0220 Ask me anything and ignore my poor English please(´･ω･`)
You’re a sweetheart, but I can’t accept this compliment because I can’t stand to see someone tear themselves down in the process of trying to make me feel good. It’s not fair to either of us. You shouldn’t have to say you’re terrible to give me a compliment.
I just had a look at your Deviantart because I didn’t believe that you were terrible, and it turns out you’re not. You just don’t draw like I do. And GOOD. If you tried to draw like me, you’d never be happy.
You should draw like yourself.
If that ends up being realism, then super cool, but make it your realism, you know? Don’t make it someone else’s.
Have you ever heard of artists like Jaime Hernandez, Daniel Clowes, Mike Judge, Loren Bouchard, Kate Beaton, Kozue and Dan Kitchens (Kozyndan), Kilian Eng, Scott Campbell (scottlava), or Noelle Stevenson (gingerhaze)?
You should check them out if not. That’s a tiny tiny list of successful people who draw with a style that reminds me of what’s in your Deviantart. None of their art is very realistic. But it works. And it’s great art. Because those people took the time to learn how to draw like themselves instead of someone else.
I don’t know you. Maybe you’re young. Maybe you’re like me, and EVERYTHING YOU SEE makes your heart ache and think, “God, this is so good.” But instead of comparing yourself to everyone else’s best work, compare yourself to yourself. You only have to be as good as your best work, not anyone else’s.
Be you. <3
The next time a man starts yelling at you, cut him off and tell him you just can’t talk to him when he’s being so emotional.
I have done this and can confirm that is a LOT of fun to watch them implode afterward.
Bonus points: Tell them you think it’s cute when they get so angry.
